My first book called "Illicit Distilling" was about just that, about illicit distilling. My interest was about knowing all about that era. The people, the stills, the events, the recipes, the police, the raids, the outwitting of each party. It was and always will be fascinating.

 

Of particular interest was the recipes. I wanted to make moonshine exactly the way the old moonshiners made it. I wanted to taste the genuine product but then when I started to investigate what is available on the world market is that there are manufactures today that are making yeasts for the home distiller that are equal to anything that the sophisticated distillers like Seagram's, Captain Morgan or Smirnoff's manufacture. This is the attitude I suggest you learn to take as you approach this new hobby. Embrace the new and have an open mind and you will make some products that you will be proud of making and you and your friends will truly enjoy. I know because that is the life I am leading.

 

Again for the fermenting stage I have access to some of the best yeasts in the world. For the filtering of Charlie's Moonwater I have a design that is new and I have proven and tested it with my friends. The activated carbon that I use takes the bad odor away that all moonshing gives off. This is a food grade activated carbon tested by all the government labs of the world. It is not charcoal that has been hand made by some moonshiner in the back woods. The flavoring of Bob's Moonwater is done by some of the finest essences that are made again anywhere in the world. The manufacturer of those has over 150 different flavorings to please the pallet of everyone. These are flavored by small 50 ml bottles. The most enjoyable product that I am having fun with is the 22 new liquors that are available in 700 ml bottles with the seal unbroken but they only contain 250 to 350 ml of product which are the flavorings. You add 250 to 350 ml of Bob's Moonwater to make up the rest. Even without flavoring of any kind the product is more than acceptable on its own. There are today many punches that when Bob's Moonwater is added to it makes an ideal drink. Think of it as a vodka and use it in the same recipes where vodka is called for. I was at a party and the host had cranberry ginger ale and everyone loved it. I was at a Christmas party and the punch that some people make are really delicious. Add Bob's Moonwater and you take that punch right around the bend.

The more you share this product with your friends the more they will enjoy you and your company and at less then a $1.00 a quart everyone can afford to share in the enjoyment.

 

 

In closing I am not suggesting you also close out doing it the old fashioned way because in doing so you get to understand the true character of the real moonshiner. They truly where the pioneers of most countries. They were a tough breed who worked very hard to bring what man's basic need seems to be and that is "likker". 

The manufacture of the "Water distilling units are also very very important today. In the old days they made stills and the majority of the stills where of significant size that they truly had to sell the product to make it feasible. They definitely were working outside the law. The moonshiner of today is much more sophisticated. We work inside the law. We are able to write the books about moonshing but he must legally manufacture a chemical still to produce distilled water and don't think the world doesn't need a good machine to distill water. But is the inquisative mind of the moonshiner of today who can take a water distillation unit including even a pressure cooker and turn it to his own devices. Also some of the products available are really state of the art and very affordable. I am very proud of the unit that I have designed. It is, I believe, a simple state of the art water distillation unit.

I think that any person who can legally make beer or wine should have the right to do this in the privacy of his own home. Most civilized countries have been able to keep governments out of the bedrooms. My philosophy is you are not doing anybody any harm they should not be able enter the house period.

I like to see myself as having that same spirit that the old-timers did. I just thank God that I was born in the new millennium not a 100 years ago.
